Manuscript Formatting

Many great stories and novels are passed over by publishers simply because the manuscript was poorly formatted. It is true, however, that a nicely organized and clean manuscript will be better received by an editor.

As a special service of AL Williams DocuPrep, we can take your finished electronic manuscript and convert it to a “standard manuscript” format for submission to publishers and agents. We will ensure that your font, character style, line spacing, paragraph style, pages numbers, margins, and layout all meet an editor’s expectations. This does not guarantee that your book or short story will be sold, of course, but a well-formatted manuscript is easier to read and has a better chance of rising above the slush pile than one that looks unprofessional. WE DO NOT ACCEPT:  manuscripts that contain objectionable, offensive, or distasteful content including, but not limited to, hard-core pornography, SM material, abuse, torture, and excessive and/or gratuitous violence.  We reserve the right to stop work on at any time without prior notice if such content is discovered during the editing process. Some Sexual content, erotica, and moderate violence are acceptable if essential to the plot if it is done tastefully.

AL Williams Docu-Prep, in its sole discretion, shall determine if a manuscript contains such objectionable, offensive, or distasteful content.  Clients are encouraged to disclose such potential content prior to entering into a contract since AL Williams Docu-Prep shall not be liable for any delay, expense, lost profits, or other matter which may be caused, either directly or indirectly, from AL Williams Docu-Prep’s determination that such content exists.

We measure the length of your book using an industry standard page of 12-point Courier type, 60 standard characters per line, 25 lines per page and, in the process, correctly format your manuscript.

What is proofreading?

Documents submitted for proofreading are carefully reviewed to ensure Proofreading results in a crisp and polished document.

Proofreading focuses on surface errors such as correct spelling, capitalization, word usage, and punctuation, to eliminate gross grammatical errors, inconsistencies and formatting. Proofreading is most effective when it follows several other editing reviews.
