Despite the old saying “don’t judge a book by its cover”, when it comes to literature we all judge
books by the cover. It’s a fact that the cover helps to sell your book. Your book cover must survive "the first glance
test"! The publishing industry relies heavily on cover art. Readers look at the front and back cover and then quickly make
buying decisions. Reviewers can only review a few books each week, so they select the book covers that appear to be the most
interesting. Sales reps will only carry the book covers and jackets when they approach bookstore owners and buyers. Wholesalers
and distributors will often say, “Just send us the cover copy”. In short, every element of the buying decisions
surrounding your hard work labored-over work is made on the illustration, design, and sales copy outside your book. Taking
the time to design – or have designed – a really good cover for your book can’t be underestimated.
